Emma's Story
(Emma Kristina Lundgren Labrie)
The 4th child of Eric Gustaf Lundgren and Johanna Lovisa (Bäckman) Lundgren was Emma Kristina (Emma Christina), born March 3, 1882, Värmland, Sweden.
Emma Kristina emigrated from Örebro in 1898 at the age of 16. According to the ship's manifest at Ellis Island, Emma Kristina left Sweden from Stockholm and her occupation was a servant. Listed next to her name on the maifest was Erik Lundgren, age 19, who may have been her cousin. She came to America aboard the Umbria which arrived in New York on June 19, 1898. From there she went to be with her brother, Anders, in Worcester.
Emma Lundgren married Joseph Labrie, who was born in North Brookfield, Massachusetts on December 14, 1875. They had two sons, Roy J. and Robert E. Labrie (1918 - 1972). Date of birth and death of Roy is unknown, but his birth date was around 1908.
According to an article that appeared in the Worcester Telegram on February 20, 1920, Joseph Labrie slipped into an oil tank, containing six feet of oil, and drowned. This accident occured at the South Works, American Steel and Wire Company, where Joseph was employed as an accountant. The incident was noticed by an associate, but Joseph died before the tank could be drained. He died on Frebruary 19, 1920 at the age of 44 years.
On March 1, 1928, Emma Labrie died at the age of 45 years. Her oldest son, Roy was old enough to live on his own, and her youngest son, Robert, temporarily lived with his aunt, Louisa Carlstrom and her family. Later he lived with his aunts, Mollie and Hannah, until he entered military service.
