The Churches in Sweden
Nysund kyrkaThe original church from 1638, was built of logs and consisted of the nave with a tower. Around 1740, the cross aisles were added which gives the church its present day appearance. The ceiling was painted with fleecy clouds and hovering angels in an attempt to create an atmosphere of peace and tranquility.

Torslanda kyrkaThe church in Torslanda was built near the end of the 12th century and is one of the oldest in Göteborg. The ground upon which the church was built was an old pagan worship site dedicated to Thor. Through the years, many changes and additions have been made. The baptismal font is perhaps as old as the church itself and is made of stone. The triptych behind the altar is from the 15th century. In the middle is Jesus, surrounded by the twelve apostles. The artist, whose name is not known, did not want Judas Iscariot among the apostles, so he replaced him with Olof, the holy, patron saint of Norway. This part of Sweden, Bohuslän, belonged to Norway at that time. The pulpit may be older than 1627. The big clock to the right of the altar is from 1796 and the angel is from 1737.
Outside the church and near the front entrance stands a monument at the gravesite of the family of my great grandfather, the Reverend Axel Leonard Carlstrom. He was the pastor of this church from 1883 until he died in 1890. He is buried alongside his wife, Augusta Emelia and two of their daughters, Teckla Victoria and Hildur Augusta. |
